| Please Note the Following Important Dates:
Kindergarten Readiness and Screening Workshop: This is for parents only from both Beal, Spring Street and Coolidge schools! The presentation will include important information about school readiness.
This year we will offer you quite a few options to register your child for kindergarten. Shrewsbury Public Schools will be doing student registration online. The address is www.shrewsbury-ma.gov/schools Just click on Student Registration located on the left side of the screen and follow the directions. (If you do not have a computer, one is available for your use at the School Department at Town Hall.) After completing the information just click on the submit button, it will then ask you to verify that the information is correct and click submit again. You will then get a screen that states to "Click here to print". You need to print this page, sign where indicated and bring this form with you to the registration. (Please note, this must be done at least 24 hours before you come to the registration). You will need to bring the Registration Verification Page, child's original birth certificate or passport (photocopies NOT accepted), and proof of residency, which must be either a TOWN utility bill or your lease agreement. This year we will provide registration at the School Department. If your child is enrolled at Parker Road or Little Colonials, they are considered already registered and it is not necessary to attend the registration dates below. All incoming kindergarteners need to go through kindergarten screening (this includes Parker Road and Little Colonials students). The next page in this packet describes options for screening. Registration will take place as follows: Registration Dates and Locations
We hope that this onsite and online registration process will make it easier for you to register your child in kindergarten.
Kindergarten screening information and dates are listed below. All members of the screening team are teachers in the Shrewsbury Public Schools and are trained to work with your children. State law requires all public schools to offer an assessment procedure for children before they enter kindergarten. For some children, screening serves as the first step in an evaluation and intervention process. Kindergarten screening provides a way to identify children who will need support in kindergarten. The early detection of children's learning problems will help them to be successful in kindergarten and in succeeding grades. The screening is not an IQ test. It does provide information about the child's language skills, small and large motor development, and his ability to adapt what he already knows to new situations. The screening results are used only to plan programs for children who may have special learning needs. All other classroom placements are made in an effort to create heterogeneous groupings. You will be sent information on your child's performance in September. If your child currently attends Parker Road or Little Colonials Preschool, it is not necessary for you to attend the screening, it is important for you to return the screening questionnaire which is enclosed in this packet. At screening your child will receive a storybook all about kindergarten! Screening Dates and Locations
Welcome Letter and Classroom Visit Schedule To Your Child From The Teacher Date: First Week in August Families will receive a packet from the school in early August. Please read the contents of the packet carefully as it contains important information and dates about the beginning of school. There is also a letter from the kindergarten teacher. The names of other children in the class will also be included in the letter. Class lists will not be posted on the doors of the Beal, Spring Street School or Coolidge School, as several parents requested that we abandon this practice for security reasons.
This is for adults only! The presentation will include important health and safety information, busing schedules, and school policies. Information regarding the School Council and the PTO will also be shared. Please note the times and sessions for attending this orientation.
Date: Tuesday August 26th (per appointment) All the children will have an opportunity to meet their classroom teacher and some of their classmates. The brief classroom visit will last approximately 30 minutes. The classroom visit is optional. We realize that working parents may have difficulty attending this session. We have found, however, that the children who have this experience feel much more comfortable coming to kindergarten independently on the first day. Specific times for the visit will be sent with the kindergarten teacher letter in August.
First Day of School for Kindergarten Date: Wednesday, August 27thDuring the first week of August, kindergarten classroom teacher assignments will be mailed to your home. This is the first day of kindergarten for all of the half day and full day kindergarten students.
School will not be open for drop-in visiting during the summer. We look forward to meeting the new students and families during screening and orientation, and on the classroom visit and bus ride day. Please feel free to call the Beal School office (508) 841-8860, Spring Street office (508) 841-8700, Coolidge School office (508)-841-8880 if you have any questions. Children will attend the same session of kindergarten for the entire year. Parents should receive a letter from with session assignment and busing information from the Shrewsbury School Department. Please contact Dianne Abbott at the Central Office at (508) 841-8320 with registration questions. |
