Board of Selectmen

The Board of Selectmen are comprised of the following elected members from left to right: James F. Kane, Benjamin W. Tartaglia, Moira Miller, Maurice M. DePalo, and John I. Lebeaux. Their terms are as follows:

The Board of Selectmen acts as the Town's Chief Executive Body responsible for the general welfare of the Community and follow guidelines set forth in Operational Policies for the Board of Selectmen.

Specific powers and responsibilities of the Board of Selectmen are set forth in Chapter 559 of the Acts of 1953 which is better known as the Town Manager Act and the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. These and additional duties include:

appointing and overseeing the work of the Town Manager
reviewing and issuing licenses to do business in the Town of Shrewsbury: alcohol, restaurant, new/used car dealership and garage and other miscellaneous licenses
reviewing annual department budgets
discussing, proposing, and voting on Proposition 2 1/2 decisions
issuing requests for Interest in Chapter 40B proposals
overseeing Chapter 43D permitting

As stewards of the community, selectmen often form subcommittees to address certain issues. The following subcommittees are currently in place:

Town to Issue Estimated Third Quarter Tax Bills - All Adjustments to be Taken on the Fourth Quarter Bill

The Town has experienced a delay in being able to set its Fiscal Year 2010 tax rate. Resulting from this delay, third quarter estimated tax bills have been issued.
Board of Selectmen Adopts Fiscal Policies for FY 2011

The Board of Selectmen recently adopted fiscal policies for FY 2011. These fiscal policies will serve as a guide in the development of the FY 2011 spending plan for the Town.
