Open Air Fires |

1 permit annually: Annually,
from January 15th through May 1st the state Department of
Environmental protection, in cooperation with the state fire
marshals office offers an ‘open-burning season’.
The purpose of this burning allowance is to clean up your
garden in preparation of the new growing season and to dispose
of ‘droppings from the trees and brush that have accumulated
over the winter. This is not meant for land-clearing or disposal
of whole trees that have been felled for whatever reason.
Burning of leaves or grass are strictly prohibited. One permit
is issued and recorded. Each day the permit holder is required
to call and request permission to burn for that day. Permission
will be granted based on wind and weather conditions at the
time. The state may stop all open burning at any time. A copy
of the rules governing open burning is provided with every
permit issuance. |

A residential smoke detector
permit is required every time your have interaction with a
lending institution. The fire department is required to physically
test every detector for operational compliance. Different
systems (battery operated, hand wired, hard wired with battery
back-up) are allowed depending on the age of the property.
FD note: any system in place is allowed to be up-graded, but
no system can be changed out to a lesser system. Any system
change must meet all the requirements of the new system installed.
At this writing (October 2003), garage protection is not required.
Private alarm systems monitored by a central station require
the presence of a representative of the monitoring company
to be present for testing. The fire department will not be
responsible for testing any device installed without a test
button directly built in to the device. (Using a test button
remotely located is not acceptable as an individual test).
