How to Dispose of Household Hazardous Products

Mercury: Waste that contains mercury is accepted at the Health Department during regular office hours. Thermostats, thermometers, and fluorescent bulbs are common household items that contain mercury. Do not put these items in the trash.

Paint: Empty paint cans, latex paint and all paints with labels that indicate soap and water clean-up of painting equipment can safely be disposed in your weekly trash bags but the paint must be dry. If you have containers of latex paint that are almost full, please try to give them away to someone who will use them. If you can not give the paint away, please take the lid off the can and let the paint harden or stir in small amounts of kitty litter until the paint is absorbed. Put the lid on the can and put the can in your trash bag.

Motor oil: Used motor oil is accepted at Sam's Mobil on Route 9 (after Chili's) for $1.00/qt. and at Wal-Mart on Route 9 in Northborough for free.

Batteries: AA, A, B, C, D, and nine volt batteries are safe to dispose in your trash bag. All rechargeable batteries and button batteries should be brought to the Health Department for proper disposal. There is no charge for this service. You can also bring in old cell phones to be recycled. Auto and marine batteries are accepted at Wal-Mart on Route 9 in Northborough.

Bug sprays, furniture polishes, and other cleaning compounds purchased for household use can be discarded in your trash. The best and safest practice is to use all of the products you purchase as they are intended to be used.

If you have questions regarding other products in your home that may be hazardous, please call Nancy Allen at 508-841-8512.

Every person who intends to construct, repair or abandon an on-site sewage disposal system must be licensed by the Board of Health to perform that work. A list of currently licensed disposal works installers is available in the Health Department.
