Building Permit Application Requirements

What Do I Need to Obtain a Permit?
  Completed Permit Application - Building permit application forms are available in the Building Inspector’s office.
  Plot Plan / Site Plan - An accurate plot plan illustrating the subject premises shall be submitted with each permit application. The plot plan shall show the configuration of the lot, existing buildings thereon and all proposed expansions.
  Building Plans - Detailed building plans shall be submitted with each building permit application. Minimum submittals shall include foundation plans, floor plans, and respective framing sections.
  Foundation Certification - Subsequent to the installation of the foundation system and prior to the construction of the superstructure, a plot plan prepared by a registered professional surveyor shall be submitted to the Building Inspector’s office.
  Commercial - Detailed plans prepared by a registered professional architect or engineer shall be submitted with each building permit application. Construction Control Affidavits shall also be submitted in accordance with Section 116 of the State Building Code.
 
Fire Protection Signaling System - Detailed plans prepared by a registered professional architect or engineer shall be submitted with each building permit application and to the Fire Department.
 
Sprinkler Systems - Detailed plans prepared by a registered professional architect or engineer shall be submitted with each building permit application and to the Fire Department.
  Residential (single family homes, additions, alterations) - The permit application shall be circulated to the various town departments to ensure the correct street address, availability of electric, water and sewer services, street access, etc.
 
Smoke Detector - A smoke detector permit shall be obtained for each new residential building or if an additional bedroom(s) is to be created within and added to an existing structure. If an additional bedroom(s) is to be created within and added to an existing structure, the entire structure must be equipped with a detection system complying with the current provisions of Section 3603.16 of the State Building Code.
 
Decks - A building permit is required for the construction of all decks. Plans shall be submitted showing the proposed construction, including footing sizes and spacing, columns, supporting beams, floor framing and guardrail and handrail details.
 

Pools - A building permit is required for the installation of all inground swimming pools and above ground swimming pools exceeding 200 sq. ft. in surface area. All pools with a water depth of 24 in. or more shall be enclosed in accordance with Section 421 of the State Building Code.

 
Additions - A building permit is required for the expansion or all buildings, structural alterations, changes in use or similar projects.
  Additional Submittals
 
Copies of Licenses - Copies of Construction Supervisor’s and Home Improve Registrations Licenses, if applicable, shall be submitted with all building permit applications.
 
Certificate of Workers Compensation Insurance - Certificate of Workers Compensation Insurance shall be submitted with all building permit applications.
 
Construction Control Affidavits (if applicable) shall be submitted with all building permit applications.
 
Letter of Authorization - A Letter of Authorization signed by the property owner shall be submitted with all building permit applications if the application is being submitted by an individual owner than the owner of the property.
 
Energy Code Compliance - A copy of the Energy Code Compliance Form(s), if applicable, shall be submitted with all building permit applications.
 
Demolition/Construction Debris Disposal Site Location - Applications for the demolition of a building or structure shall include information concerning the site where such debris is to be disposed.
