Children's Programs

Special Programs
The Children’s Room also offers special programs to celebrate holidays. Activities and special events are planned for elementary students during school vacations and days off from school. During the summer, children may come to the library for our annual Summer Reading Program which includes crafts projects, special events, guest performers, and a motivational reading program with a different theme every year.

Discovery Kits Have Arrived!
Check out our new Discovery Kits designed for children being schooled at home or students in Grades 2 -4. We have assembled thirteen kits on various topics. Each kit contains a variety of items created for learning and fun. The contents of the kits will vary, and may include DVD’s, CD-ROMs, games, models and puzzles. Kits may be checked out for a period of 3 weeks. Teachers using their teacher cards may arrange for a longer period if needed. The kits were developed with LSTA funds through the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Storytimes

The Children's Room offers the following Storytime sessions:

  • Baby and Me Storytimes are offered to infants and children up to 2 _ years old and lasts about 30 minutes. Each session consists of stories, finger plays, songs and movement. It requires a parent/caregiver to work closely with the registered child. The Baby and Me Storytime allows other siblings to attend; however, this is not a playgroup.
  • Preschool Storytimes are offered to children 2 to 6 years old and each session is about 45 minutes long. Children and parents/caregiver may attend each session on a “drop-in” basis.
  • Lunch Bunch Storytimes are offered to children of all ages and their parents/caregivers. Each session is held around lunchtime and lasts about 30 minutes. Bring your lunch and a blanket. Relax and listen to some stories.

For exact schedules of storytimes, please contact the Children’s Room
at (508) 842-0081 X4.

Baby Gift Bags
Bring your baby’s Birth Certificate to the Children’s Room and receive a free “Baby Gift Bag”. Gift bags are for Shrewsbury residents and are for babies up to six months of age. The bags are co-sponsored with the Shrewsbury Community Partnership for Children.
