Answers
  1. Can I use my Shrewsbury Public Library card at any other library?

Yes, you can use your Shrewsbury card at almost any public library in the state that is certified to receive State Aid to Public Libraries, as long as your card is not blocked. Your card is blocked if you accumulate more than $3.00 in fines.

  2. How old do I have to be to get a library card?
You have to be at least five years old to get a library card.

  3. Do you assign family memberships?

No, each person must get their own library card. The cards are non transferable and must be presented each time a library transaction is made.

  4. What do I do if I lose my Library Card?
The Library can issue you a new one at a cost of $2.00 with a form of identification.

  5. Can children of all ages come to the Library?
Yes, everyone is welcome in the Library. However, children under the age of 10 must be continually attended by a parent or caregiver in all parts of the Library.

  6. Where can I return Library items?
You can return Library items in the Library, or, when the Library is closed, in the book and video drops. Please DO NOT put Audiobooks, and music CDs and cassettes in the drops; these must be returned in the library. You can also return items to other neighboring libraries.

  7. Are there any online services available to me from home?
Yes, you may search many databases that are sponsored by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners at their website (http://www.mlin.lib.ma.us/cgi-bin/remote.pl). You will need your library card number to access these databases. InfoTrac databases include Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, General Reference Center, Health Reference Center, and Business and Companies databases. Also available are Massachusetts newspapers, eBooks, and other special collections.

  8. Can you get an item from another Library?
Yes, we can order items that we don't own or is checked out from other libraries. This can be done at the Front Desk, or if you have access to an internet connection, you can place the hold from home. More instructions on Patron Placed Holds coming soon.

  9. How can I find information about Library Programs?
The library publishes a newsletter every three months, which is mailed to every home in Shrewsbury. Additional copies are available at the Front Desk. Programs are posted in community newspapers such as The Weekly Record, The Shrewsbury Chronicle and the Community Advocate. Look for signs around the Library and on SPAC cable as well.

  10. Where are new fiction books located?

All of our new books can be found in the Front Reading Room. We also have a "FAST READ" shelf opposite the Front Desk. Remember, if you can't find what you are looking for we can most likely reserve it for you.

  11. Do you have old copies of magazines and newspapers?
We have magazine subscriptions for the current year, and we keep past issues back 3 years. This year's magazines can be found in the Front Reading Room, and past issues can be found on the back wall near Reference. Current newspapers can be found in the Front Reading Room. If you need newspapers back further than that, please ask at the Reference Desk.

  12. Are there any Museum Passes available?

Yes! Click here to reserve museum passes online.

  13. Do you have a fax and copier available for public use?

Yes, we have 2 copiers available for public use at 15 cents/copy. We do not have a fax available for public use.

Yes, the Library has 10 computer stations equipped with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet connections. To use a computer you must have a valid library card in good standing.

  15. Do you have equipment available to assist patrons with reading, hearing, etc?
Yes, the Library owns an Optelec machine that magnifies print for easier reading and a Phonic Ear that amplifies sounds. The Library also has a TTY phone at the Reference Desk and a computer with a magnifier for visually impaired individuals. For more information about this equipment, please ask at the Front Desk.
