HELP US WITH OUR BIG READ PROJECT, BY FILLING OUT THE NATIONAL BIG READ SURVEY

It takes less than 10 minutes to fill out the online survey. This will let the National Endowment for the Arts know about your Big Read experience in Shrewsbury. Just click on the box below.

Thanks for your help.

Telling our Stories: The Immigration Experience
April through May 2008

Join us for a community wide celebration of reading, remembrance and “telling our stories”. The project will focus on Willa Cather’s classic novel of the immigrant experience, My Ántonia. Few books pack so much vibrantly real life into their pages as My Ántonia. The novel teems with romance, violence, tenderness, cruelty, comedy, and tragedy-all bustling side by side in a narrative at once compassionate and compelling.

The two-month program will honor the immigrant experience in readings, dramatic performances, book and film discussions, workshops in genealogy research, memoir writing and storytelling. There will also be an opportunity for residents to record personal immigrant stories for a local cable production. Children’s activities will include puppet shows with folklore from around the world, as well as a Frontier crafts, games, music and more. The grand finale will be a daytrip to the Ellis Island Immigration museum in New York Harbor.

Pick up a copy of the book (We’ll be handing out free copies of the book to the first 300 participants), as well as free audio and readers guides.

This project is partially funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with the Institute of museum and library services and Arts MidWest, and is a joint project of the Shrewsbury Public Library, the Shrewsbury School Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Council on Aging, the Friends of the Shrewsbury Library, Shrewsbury Media Connection and the Library’s Adult Services Advisory Committee

Please join us in the exciting programs and performances that will be taking place all over town.
