Every Day, 4 PM-10 PM

This free service allows students to connect to an expert tutor either from the IShrewsbury Public Library or from their home PC with a library card, every day from 4 p.m.-10 pm.and receive one-to-one homework help from a live tutor via the Internet. Childrens and teens click on the Live Homework Help icon and then enter their grade level and the subject they need help in. In just a few minutes, students are connected to a tutor in an Online Classroom for help in math (elementary, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus), science (elementary, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics), social studies (American History, World History, Political Science and more), and English (spelling, grammar, essay writing, book reports).

Digital Books

C/W MARS Online Digital Books

C/W MARS is proud to announce the arrival of digital Audio Books and eBooks for your enjoyment. Patrons from member libraries can browse and search hundreds of great titles and download them to computers, transfer them to portable devices, or burn them onto CDs for reading and listening anywhere, anytime.

NetLibrary Electronic Books Collection

Collection of online/electronic books (eBooks) consisting of 38,000 titles. Provided by the Boston Public Library Statewide Reference and Referral center, funded by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. You may browse netLibrary books online for 15 minutes. Setting up a netLibrary account allows you to "check out" books for up to 24 hours. As with "real" library books, only one person may browse or check out a book at a time.

Online Reference Service

MassAnswers

MassAnswers, (www.massanswers.org), is an innovative 'round the clock' virtual reference service for Massachusetts residents. Funded with a Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) federal grant to the Boston Public Library (BPL), the BPL coordinates the service in conjunction with the current nine regional reference centers in Andover, Bridgewater, Falmouth, Fitchburg, New Bedford, Quincy, Springfield, Wellesley and Worcester.

MassAnswers uses 24/7 Reference software from the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System (MCLS) in southern California. MCLS licenses the use of their Internet chat reference software product to libraries around the world. The round-the-clock service is staffed by librarians from around the world including the reference staffs of the Massachusetts reference centers.

Through MassAnswers librarians can:

  • Communicate with patrons using realtime chat day or night
  • Guide the patron’s browser to the best resources on the Internet
  • Send files, images, PowerPoint presentations, etc. to the patron’s computer.
  • Use customized, pre-scripted chat messages and Web pages, to improve efficiency.
  • Network with others by transferring complex requests to a local or remote expert.
  • Access reports, transcripts of sessions with patrons, and a wide variety of usage statistics on demand.
Benefits to patrons include the ability to communicate with a reference librarian any time over the Internet. They can have Web pages, files, etc. sent to their computers to view simultaneously while the reference librarian is working with them. Patrons can also receive a transcript of the session.

Grolier Encyclopedias Online

The library offers access to both Grolier's Encyclopedia Americana and Multimedia Encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia Americana is a resource for high school, college and beyond, providing information and maps on a wide variety of topics. It also includes magazine articles and links to many websites. The Encyclopedia Americana is updated quaterly.

Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia is a resource for middle school and beyond. It provides resources on getting started on a research topic and many current events links. NewsBank

Our NewsBank resources include America's Obituaries and Death Notices, America's Newspapers, and the Boston Globe E-Edition.

The America's Newspapers service includes full-text articles from a wide selection of local, regional, and national newspapers, including The Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times.

America's Obituaries and Death Notices is the largest and most comprehensive collection of newspaper obituaries and death notices. Extensive editorial review of all newspaper sections ensures thorough selection of obituaries for easy access. An easy-to-use interface allows searching by name, date range, or text such as institutional name, social affiliation(s), geographic location(s), philanthropic activities, etc.

The Boston Globe E-Edition:  the electronic image edition is an exact digital reproduction of the printed edition, with keyword searching and ability to browse the full publication. All pages, including advertising, photos and graphics are included.

Science Online is a curriculum-oriented database that offers a comprehensive, authoritative overview of the sciences.
