Against Domestic Violence In Shrewsbury Education Project

Mission Statement
ADVISE is an organization whose mission is to empower the community and individuals to recognize that the problem of domestic violence exists in Shrewsbury.

The goal of ADVISE is to break the cycle of domestic violence in Shrewsbury by working together with the community, through education, intervention and support.

What is Abuse?

Abuse can be physical, economic, and psychological. Abuse stems from the batterer's desire for control. This list will help you recognize of abuse you are experiencing, the more dangerous your situation may be.

Verbal Abuse
criticizing, blaming, yelling, swearing, accusing
Disrespect
not listening or responding, putting down
Abusing Trust
lying, cheating, being overly jealous, keeping secrets
Emotional Withholding
not giving support, not expressing feelings, not respecting your feelings or opinions
Self-destructive Behavior
abusing drugs and alcohol, threatening suicide
Isolation
discouraging relationships with friends and family, checking calls, preventing your going to work or school
Harassment
following, checking up on you, embarrassing you in public

Obtaining A Restraining Order

Under the Abuse Prevention Act (Ch.209A), you can obtain a temporary restraining order. Orders are available at Westborough District Court, Milk Street (8:30 am to 3:30 pm, M-F), and at other times through the local police and judge on call.

You do not have to hire a lawyer or pay a fee, but your relationship with the abuser must be: married or formerly married, related by blood or marriage, parents of one or more children, living in same household, or in a dating or engagement relationship.

A full restraining order:

Orders the abuser to stop abuse
>
Requires the abuser to leave the premises
>
Grants temporary support for minors
>
Prevents direct or indirect contact
>
At any time, you can amend the order to reflect your current situation. If the abuse includes assault and battery, you may press charges.

A domestic abuse call is reported, on average, every day to the Shrewsbury Police

The F.B.I. reports:

  • In Massachusetts, a woman is killed by her abuser every 14 days.
  • A woman is beaten every 15 seconds in the United States.Domestic violence does not discriminate.
  • Victims of domestic violence come from all cultures, all income groups, all ethnic groups, all ages, and religions.
  • No one deserves to be beaten.
  • You always have a choice
