School Space Planning


I. Curriculum and Instruction

a) Implement action plans in Language Arts and Visual Arts.

b) Host visiting teams for curriculum reviews in Health, Physical Education and Family and Consumer Science (fall), Science and Technology (winter) and Mathematics (spring).

c) Begin the self-study process in Social Studies.

d) Promote a district-wide commitment to writing instruction with clearly identified outcomes for students and provide for teacher initiative within the established scope and sequence of the language arts curriculum.

e) Review grouping practices at the Middle School and align with the school district policy.

f) Present a report on the development of student competencies in technology to the School Committee (fall) in preparation of a pilot program in 1999-00 and district-wide implementation in 2000-01.

II. Accountability

a) Analyze MCAS scores to assess the status of alignment of each content area with Curriculum Frameworks.

b) Develop and implement action plans for students performing in the failing and needs improvement range on Iowa’s and/or MCAS.

c) Establish district-wide procedures to promote high levels of student attendance and incorporate appropriate information in all school handbooks.

d) Redesign the elementary report card to align with newly adopted programs and standards-based instruction. Develop a computerized process for piloting in April 2000, with district-wide adoption and implementation in September 2000.

e) Develop a district-based indicators report for publication as district-wide report card.

f) Implement revised student registration procedures with a particular focus on tracking attendance patterns and enrollment reporting to the Department of Education.

g) Initiate the process of data collection in preparation for a Department of Revenue Audit of the school district.

h) Align FY01 budget requests with district goals and action steps.

III. School Culture: Safety and Security

a) Work to improve school cultures through such activities as responsive classroom, student mentor programs and other opportunities for student leadership.

b) Implement a program of police liaisons in collaboration with the police department.

c) Engage an outside agency to evaluate the DARE program.

d) Implement a transitional drug and alcohol education program for 5th graders in the second semester of the year.

e) Establish a teacher/police committee to write the curriculum for a permanent program to be implemented in 2000-01.

f) Communicate the deliberations and decisions on this topic through such means as a forum for school councils, the local press, school committee meetings, and Superintendent’s Forum.

g) Create safety audit teams to review facilities, procedures, and emergency plans in each school.

h) Work with the architect to include safety and security considerations in the design of the new high school.

IV. School Space Planning

a) Engage the Coordinating Council in the early fall to formulate recommendations for portable classrooms for 2000-01.

b) Sponsor a community forum on short-term needs.

c) Support the School Committee in making its request of town meeting for 2000-01.

d) Work with the Coordinating Council during the late fall and winter to make recommendations (additional portables, redistricting, etc.) for 2001-2002 and beyond.

e) Continue to work with the Building Committee and architect to finalize plans to renovate the existing high school for use as a second middle school and to finalize the design of the new high school.

f) Maintain communications and collaboration among the Building Committee, School Committee and school administrators.

V. Tolerance, Respect, and Diversity

a) Provide workshops for school administrators in the leadership conference and in DLT meetings during the course of the year.

b) Offer a study group on diversity for teachers.

c) Increase efforts to recruit and hire minority candidates for 2000-01.

d) Share Floral St. School’s experience with a diversity consultant with other schools.

e) Make a presentation to the School Committee addressing on-going activities in the area.

f) Plan for greater staff involvement in this goal for the 2000-01 school year.

VI. Professional Development

a) Provide opportunities for teachers to develop leadership skills through curriculum review and development projects, professional development offerings (workshops and courses) and other projects, such as the elementary report card revision project or the Middle School Study Group Project.

b) Improve the implementation of phases 2 and 4 in the teacher supervision and evaluation program.

c) Offer workshops and courses to assist teachers in developing skills to meet the needs of all learners.

d) Refine Strategies for Effective Teaching course.

e) Enhance the mentor program by strengthening the partnership with Anna Maria College and providing monthly professional development meetings for both mentor teachers and protégé teachers.

f) Establish minimum teacher competencies in technology and provide professional development with an emphasis on integrating technology into the classroom.

g) Provide professional development workshops for Section 504 building coordinators and develop a district-wide database to write and track accommodation plans.
