Speech Team

Advisor: Mrs. Powers

Brief Description:

The Speech Team meets from mid-September through early June. Practices are held every Thursday from 2:45 to 5:00 in the Oak cafeteria.

Members work on presentation skills with coaching from both adults and high school Speech and Debate Team members. Categories for participation include prose, poetry, play reading, declamation, duo interpretation, original oratory, and impromptu. Team members take part in six tournaments each year, but the focus is on personal improvement as much as it is on competitive success.

Team members are encouraged to participate for the school year. However, additional students are also welcome to join at any time.

Months of activity: Mid-September through early June

Special requirements to participate:

All students participating on the Speech team must pay an activity fee. This is a one time fee of $50.00 per student for all activities at Oak Middle School.
There is also an entry fee of $5.00 per event entered in each tournament, along with a fee for bus transportation to competitions. In addition, students need an appropriate dress for competitions. Boys need a shirt, tie, pants that are not jeans, and shoes that are not sneakers. Girls need either a dress, or skirt at least knee length, or pants that are not jeans, and shoes that are not sneakers.
