Soph Reese, speedy Colonials aim high
this season by coach Adrian Machado and the Colonials.
Last night on the road, Reese led the way with a game-high 27 points as Shrewsbury
defeated Gardner High, 67-46.
“We really came together as a team in this one,” said the 6-foot
Reese, who as a freshman started as the team’s point
guard before moving to shooting guard this year. “I love running the floor and I love attacking the basket.”
“I thought Colby played very well. He’s my returning gun,” said Machado, the former Burncoat High and Stonehill
College star, adding with a smile about Reese’s position switch: “He
looks to score more than he looks to dish.”
Playing with a fast-paced tempo from the opening tap, the Colonials broke
to a 22-12 first-quarter lead. The Wildcats,
with a strong second quarter led by junior Anthony Malave, cut it to 33-27 at halftime, but the visitors came back after
the break and pulled away big.
“Last year, we were slow and methodical. This year, I’m looking
to run and go 100 miles an hour,” Machado said.
In between all the running and no speeding tickets, Shrewsbury’s Sam
Ardis, with 10 points, and Pat Russell, with 9,
were smoothly hitting jumpers and an occasional breakaway layup.
In the opening quarter, Russell forged a quick Colonials burst from a 4-4
tie. He sank a 3-pointer from the left wing,
followed with a layup, and a steal and another basket. Paul Speicher then swished a 3-pointer and the score spiked to
14-4.
Gardner patiently came back toward the end of the quarter as Lamarius Ervin
found the range on a couple of jumpers
and Matt Berner beat the buzzer with a midcourt steal and layup.
Malave, Gardner’s high scorer with 10 points, scored seven straight
points in the second quarter as the Wildcats
pulled closer. Freshman Adam Conquest and senior Mark Kruger added key hoops. Gardner trailed, 30-27, with a
minute left in the half. Berner, Kruger and Conquest each finished with
8 points.
Two minutes into the second half, the Colonials had stretched their lead to
10 points, led by Ardis and Jose Cruz, who
added 6 points and several rebounds. Curt Harrington and John Justiniano chipped in with a couple of baskets as
Shrewsbury led by 20 points, 52-32, after three quarters.
“When they got close, Mike Okayka gave us a spark off the bench with
some key rebounds,” Machado said.
Reese scored six more points in the fourth quarter, finishing with nine from
the field and nine from the foul line.
Said Reese, who has lofty expectations for his team: “Last year, we
went 10-10 and lost in the first round to Wachusett.
This year, WPI is our goal.”
Said Gardner coach Tim Caouette, his team now 1-1: “They flat-out beat
us. We didn’t show up ready to play tonight.
We played one good quarter, the second. But we took the first and third quarters off. We can build off this, though.
And there are 18 games left.”
