Team counts for Colonials
Steve Farley Indoor Track
Like the New England Patriots, the Shrewsbury High boys’ indoor
track team is expected to buy into a system, and under fourth-year coach
Ian Butterfield, it’s not necessarily what’s best for the
individual, but what’s best for the team.
The Colonials may not have the most elite track athletes in Central
Mass., or necessarily boast the flashiest times or distances around
these parts, but they do have a group of winners who seem to come through
in the clutch.
“They’re not just this and they’re not just that.
We have a ‘team’ going on here,” said Butterfield,
whose father, the legendary Charlie Butterfield, guided the cross country
and track programs at David Prouty for many years. “We’ve
had some good performances throughout (the season), but it’s more
than that. We’re having a fun year and a successful year so far.”One
of Shrewsbury’s goals this winter was to have a second straight
undefeated dual-meet season, but that went by the boards on Wednesday
when the Colonials lost to Mid-Wach A stalwart Wachusett. The Colonials
topped Fitchburg the same day and are 6-1.
Last year, Shrewsbury and Algonquin tied at the Mid-Wach A championship
meet and were named co-champions. This year’s meet is next Saturday
in Fitchburg.
Shrewsbury hasn’t won a Central Mass. championship since 1986.
To have a strong team, you need strong captains. Butterfield has three
in seniors Sami Elhajjajy, Chris Coates, and Mike Sahl, a four-year
member of the squad.
Elhajjajy set a school record in the 600 with a 1:28.85 at a preseason
event at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center.
“He’s a team player,” Butterfield said. “He’d
like to break his own record later this year. We’ve used him in
other places in distance events. He came out his freshman year doing
sprints, but did not compete his sophomore year. During his junior year,
he came back for us doing middle distances and had an immediate impact.”
Another senior is first-year harrier Mike Chapin, whose specialty has
become the high hurdles with a top time of 8.3.
“Without him, we probably would not be getting too many points
in the high hurdles,” Butterfield said. “They’re a
young group of kids. Mike stepped in and went right to the top of the
group.”
Junior Mike Flynn has been solid in the 300 meters, posting a 37.67
at the Reggie Lewis and a 38.7 in dual meets. Butterfield said Flynn
has the second-fastest time in the Mid-Wach, and that includes A, B
and C, and ranks in the top 15 in all of Central Mass.
Another junior is Alex Alvarez, who sports a 6.8 in the 55 meters.
Leading the underclassmen is sophomore Anthony Frissora, who runs the
1,000.
