Female Athlete of the Season
-Tim Harrington

(Field Hockey Star Shannon Slaughter)
Two-year field hockey captain Shannon Slaughter has been voted girls athlete of the season by the Sport Management Program for the fall season. The three-year varsity starter led the 17 – 3 Colonials to a Mid-Wach A Championship at the Center-back position. She was voted into the “Best 60” game by Massachusetts coaches and was selected as League MVP. The team’s season came to an end in the district semi-finals game in an overtime loss to Quabbin, 2 to 1. Shannon’s career will continue as she has committed to play at the University of Connecticut next year. She will be senior captain of the SHS Girls Basketball Team this winter and also plans to participate in spring track. Congratulations to Shannon Slaughter for her great achievements this season!

TEAM OF THE SEASON

-Justin McCarthy and Jon Evans

Undefeated seasons don’t happen to any ordinary team, and the SHS Girls Soccer Team is anything but an average team. Led by senior captains, Amanda Derosier, Lauren Duval, and Heather Melander, the Colonials tore through Mid-Wach A opponents en route to the League Championship and their first- ever undefeated regular season record of 14-0-4. Despite a hard fought 1 – 0 loss versus Westboro in the district tournament, the Lady Colonials had a truly remarkable season. The team also looks forward to future success with a solid core group of underclassmen who were key in the Lady Colonial’s success.

Male Athlete of the Season
-Dylan Hullinger
The Sport Management Program has selected football co-captain Mike D’Alessandro for his great efforts throughout the fall season. He has played various positions on both sides of the ball, including tailback, fullback, cornerback and kick returner. Mike’s ability to play both offensive and defensive positions has made him a very versatile, well-rounded football player for head coach Terry Walles. Despite losing to Leominster on Senior night, and a hard fought 17 – 14 loss to Milford on turkey day, the team finished with an exceptional record of 7 - 4. Over the first ten games, Mike has accumulated 43 tackles and 4 interceptions, one shy of the school record for a single season. He was also selected to the Central Massachusetts All-Star Team, and hopes to continue his passion for football in college.

What is the Sport Management Program?

The Sport Management Program’s mission is to provide students an opportunity to experience careers in sport, while promoting school spirit and creating a participatory school culture.

Mr. O’Connell, Mr. O’Connor, and Mrs. Moisan advise the program, which currently has 31 students involved. This group is now working on promotional events for athletic contests: a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament (Shrewsbury High Shootout), our monthly newsletter (The Fan), and pep rally to be held in January.

Students have had the opportunity to hear from Joanna Nelson of the Toronto Blue Jays and has agreements from the Worcester IceCats and Notre Dame University as future guests.
