Welcome to our “whole school” celebration
of song. The children and staff of Beal School come together weekly
on Fridays (10:55am and 1:10pm) to share music and singing. Sing along is
an opportunity to build community and celebrate the diversity of our
school. We are also teaching our children to be polite and respectful
in a large group setting.
Every Friday we sing a variety of songs. Words to songs are projected
on a screen via the overhead projector. A song leader points to the
words as we sing. Many children can read the words and others are learning
about print as they watch the pointer move from left to right and sweep
down to the next line. Each week students take turns holding the American
flag as songs about the flag are sung. Birthdays are celebrated weekly
at sing along. If it is your child’s birthday, you are welcome
to attend.

This year through a Creative School’s grant from the Massachusetts
Cultural Council http://www.massculturalcouncil.org/grants/index.html,
funds were awarded to Beal School to provide staff development on the
importance of music in the everyday life of children. Song leader, Nick
Page, http://www.nickmusic.com,
is working with Beal staff to integrate music into their everyday classroom
routine. Nick attended sing along in December and visited classrooms
as well.
Our sing along supports our students to acquire better listening and
communication skills, while developing an appreciation for music. Music
is connected to everyday literacy activities of Beal students.
Community Sing Along
Family members and the community are invited to our sing along on scheduled
dates throughout the year. However you may attend the week of your child’s
birthday so you can sing Happy Birthday with us. When you attend sing
along, We encourage you to participate in the singing and building community
that this assembly offers. We are working hard to teach our students
appropriate listening and audience behavior. Please assist us by modeling
this behavior. When the song leaders and teachers raise their hand and
make a “v” with their fingers and put the other finger to
their lips, this means that we will wait for everyone to be silent.
There is no talking during this sign. We would appreciate you helping
us to model this sign by discontinuing any conversations when you see
this sign. If you have a youngster with you and they become fidgety,
please feel free to step out of the gym until they are calm.
