  1. Does the Board have control over building and development?
No, all building and regulatory activities are handle by either the Planning
Board, Zoning Board of Appeals or Conservation Commission. The BOS controls
the issuance of licenses.

  2. How do I bring an issue before the Board?
Write a letter to the Board of Selectman, or send an email to selectmen@th.ci.shrewsbury.ma.us. The letter will be reviewed under the "communications" portion of the next public Monday meeting. The Board will then discuss, and if necessary, act on the issue. Anonymous letters will not be placed on the agenda.

  3. Are all the meetings public and can anyone attend?

All the Board of Selectmen's meeting are open to any of the public, and must be posted at least 2 days in advance at the Town Hall. The Board may hold "executive session" closed door meetings after the public meeting is opened, but only for a few specific reasons, such as considering the purchase of real property.

  4. How do I run for Selectman?

Any resident of Shrewsbury may pull nomination papers at anytime for a run in the annual May election. Papers are available at the Town Clerk's Office. To become a candidate, an individual must collect at least 50 signatures of registered voters. Terms run for three years and are staggered.

  5. Do the Selectmen get paid?

Yes, each member of the Board of Selectmen gets paid a $145.83 stipend each month along with a monthly car allowance of $28.00 for a total of $2,085.96 each year.

  6. How much of a time commitment is involved for a Selectman?

Selectmen are expected to attend two Board of Selectmen meetings each month. These meeting run about 2-3 hours each. Attendance is also often required at various committee/ advisory meetings and hearings, especially during budget times in Feb/March. The Town holds an average of 1-3 town meetings per year, which the Selectmen must attend. In addition, Selectmen are often asked to participate in special occasions, Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations, and the Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival. A large time commitment is requried, so please don't run for Selectman if you can't serve.
