The Water Department was started in 1905. It is municipally
owned by the Town of Shrewsbury. All of our water supply is derived
from a series of gravel packed wells. These wells are primarily
located in the northwest quadrant of our community. We supply over
9,000 service connections to approximately 32,000 people through
190 miles of main.
On an average day, the Department pumps about 4 million gallons
per day from our six active wells. Water is treated for volatile
organic compound (VOC) removal, corrosion control and manganese
sequestering. Fluoridation and chlorination is also added to the
water supply.
The Sewer Department started as a separate department in
1963. Wastewater is treated with primary and secondary treatment
at the regional Westborough Plant. After treatment water is discharged
into the Assabet River. The Department operates and maintains approximately
40 pump stations and 150 miles of main throughout the system.
