  1. What is Town ISP?
Town ISP is your high-speed cable connection to the Internet. Using the cable television network as a high-speed conduit, data, voice and video can be sent across the Internet directly to your home computer or office desktop at incredible speeds. Town ISP offers free e-mail, web space and technical support as part of standard monthly service.

  2. What is included when I order Town ISP high speed Internet access service?
Cable modem service includes high speed Internet access, three e-mail addresses, 10 MB web space, and free technical support. Installation includes hookup of a cable modem and computer configuration for optimal performance. The cable modem is included with the Town ISP service, which is included in your monthly fee. An Ethernet card may be required for installation.

  3. Where is Town ISP service available?

Shrewsbury only.

  4. How does cable Internet access compare to other access options?
There are several factors to consider when evaluating your Internet access options. First there is the service cycle for ordering and installation. This is how long you will have to wait for your modem and service to be installed and operational once you order it. Next, you must figure the cost of equipment, installation and monthly service. And finally, you must evaluate the speed of the Internet service and how it will enhance your life. Visit the Comparison Page for a small comparison between a Cable Modem and a Dial-up connection.

  5. Can I use AOL Instant MessengerTM with Town ISP Internet access?

Yes, you can use AOL instant messaging with the Townisp services and you DO NOT need an AOL account. To download a copy of the AOL Instant MessengerTM software, please visit the link below:

  6. A web site is down. A message reads "Server Is Busy"

TownISP makes every effort to ensure 100% up time for our servers. If you have attempted to access a web site and received a message reading "Server Is Busy", you should first try to connect to another site. If other sites are able to load then the problem is NOT with the TownISP service. The issue is stemming from the company that owns the web site you are unable to access. It is the responsibility of that web site owner to correct the problem.

If you are unable to connect to any web sites on the Internet, then there is a service issue. Please contact our help desk at 508-841-8572 for further instructions.

  Cable

  7. How does a cable modem work?
A cable modem acts as an interface between the Internet and your computer, enabling it to communicate with other computers on the Internet.

  8. How much does a cable modem cost?
Nothing, the cable modem is included in your monthly fee.

  9. Can I install a cable modem myself?
No. We require that a certified installer install and configure each cable modem for optimum performance.

  10. Will a cable modem replace my current modem?
While connected to the Town ISP, you will be using a cable modem and not your phone modem. However, you may want to keep your phone modem in the event you move to an area that doesn't provide cable Internet access.

  11. Will the cable modem affect my cable television channels?
No. There is no interference between cable television signals and Internet data in a coaxial cable. The two signals travel at different frequencies and therefore do not interfere with each other.

  12. Can I have more than one computer hooked up to my modem?
You may connect up to 2 computers, but a hub must be installed to do so. A hub is very similar to a multi-outlet power strip. Once the hub is connected to the modem, additional computers can be connected to the hub in order to share the Internet signal. Each computer will need an Ethernet card to interface with the hub. Additional IP addresses may be necessary.

Town ISP, even though allows multiple computers to be hooked up, does NOT support networking, NOR the second PC hook-up.

  Ethernet Cards

  13. Where can I get an Ethernet card?

Ethernet cards can be purchased at almost any computer retailer, or from your Town ISP installation specialist.

Ethernet Card Installation
Operating Systems have dynamic tables built in called a registry. Introducing a new card into a PC machine without first setting the card's Bus Address and Interrupt (IRQ) to available setting can cost you hours of work. Windows NT or Windows NT workstation are very sensitive to this and can, according to Microsoft "place you in a situation that requires you to 'Reinstall the OS and then all of the customers application software and settings'". There is a high probability you can expect an install problem from a machine that has loads devices, like sound..etc, built on to its motherboard. Note: New Compaq and Dell machines.

Windows 9x and up (Windows 95/98/ME/2000) is more forgiving than Windows 3.1, Windows NT and NT workstation machines. Chances are a Windows 9x machine will not crash or it will return to normal upon the removal of the card. Over 80% of the time you can expect Windows 9x to work well with Plug n Play Ethernet cards.

  Installation Information

  14. How long do installations take?
Installations can take anywhere from twenty minutes to two hours. Installations include evaluation and verification of the quality of current cable connections, installation of the modem and Ethernet card (if necessary), and system configuration. Most installations take about an hour.

  15. What is the cost of installation?
Installation fee is $74.95 for customers without cable, but may be waived during special promotions, and prices may vary.

  16. Who do I call for installation?
Call SCC at 508-841-8500 to schedule installation of a cable modem and service.
  Remote Access to Email

  17. Remote Access to Email

New to Shrewsbury's High speed internet service, we now offer remote access to your e-mail at no extra charge. Now whenever you are away from home you will be able to check your e-mail remotely. To access your e-mail through the internet go to http://webmail.townisp.com . This site allows you to view and send any e-mail, with your Townisp Account, from any computer that has access to the internet. The intention of this service is for our customers who need access to their e-mail away from their home computer.

Please note: That you have the option within this program to create folders and move email within these folders. You must keep the email in your INBOX, in the webmail system, to download the email to your home PC. Also once downloaded to your home PC, you will not be able to view that e-mail from the remote access service. For information on how to log on to the remote access service and to get a preview of its look & feel.

If your PC, connected to your cable modem, is powered ON and is set up automatically to download mail, you will not be able to remotely view email as described above.

The remote access email system is not intended to be a substitute for the mail software set up on your PC.
